Let’s Go Walking Brandon, MS

Listen up good folks of Brandon! Our Governor Haley Barber and First Lady Barber have declared, “Let’s go walking MS”. Hey, since they have given us some great advice, then I believe we ought listen. Although summer is over, it is never too late to start exercising. One of the best places to get started is here in Brandon at the walking park connected to the Crossgates River Oaks Hospital, formerly known as Rankin Medical Center.

If you are driving it is easy to miss this well-kept natural sanctuary. It is tucked away behind the tree line off of HWY 80 next to Walgreens. It is beautiful, peaceful, always well-taken care off, and in my opinion, under-utilized by the citizens of Rankin county.

I usually go walking at the park three times per week, and I usually power-walk for about 30 minutes each time I go. Some days there are lots of people walking and jogging at the park, and other days there are only a few. Everyday is different. It just depends on the time of day, the temperature and weather. I usually go in the evenings after the sun has gone down. There are regular walkers that I have met and have become friends with. Some days I walk alone, but I do enjoy the camaraderie of walking together and talking on the park trails with friends. It makes the exercising go by faster. One time around the walking trail is about a mile. Some people walk and jog faster than others. If you are just beginning to exercise, don’t be intimidated by the experienced walkers and joggers. Find your own pace. When I exercise I am not there to compete against others. I am there to stay fit, improve my health, and to socialize from time to time. Remember, not all of us are 16 years old anymore. You don’t have to go out and try to make up several years in 30 minutes of exercising. Take it slowly day by day. You will increase your distance and stamina as time goes by. Also, keep in mind health-care professionals recommend you consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise program. Go see your doctor, and I look forward to seeing you at the walking park of Crossgates River Oaks Hospital.
